Hi,
Thanks guys for your suggestions.
I've finally decided what virus program to use.
To sum it up, this is basically what is suggested:
1) It depends
2) Whatever works for you
3) Whatever is free.
1) Installation
So, I pick the free CA's eTrash 7.0 offered by my ISP with "lifetime
subsription" as long as I pay their bill.
I don't know how good eTrust is. However, as soon as I uninstall PC-cillin,
my computer is a little bit more responsive now. Installation is quick.
Just click next and it is done.
2) Testing
To test eTrust, I go to the eicar.org site to click on the virus test
string. eTrust pops right up and nukes the test file. This doesn't mean
much but at least it is running. And then, I try to email myself the test
file to see if eTrust will stop it. However, this is a little bit tricky to
do. My ISP trashs the test file before the email can get back to me. So, I
have no way to test this part of the virus program. But this means eTrust
is not scanning outgoing emial. No big deal to me. Any ISP will likely
catch the virus anyway.
3) Updating
The update process is very good (to me). It runs the update once every 1 or
2 days. It doesn't pop up any message at all. In a matter of fact, eTrust
doesn't pop up anything for anything at all. PC-cillin, Norton, and McAfee
alway pop up everything all the time. When eTrust is downloading and
updating the defination, there is only a small icon showed in the XP Taskbar
next to the clock. I can hardly notice it is doing the update at all.
4) Setup Option
The number of options is close to nothing. It only has 3 tabs. Each tab
has only 2-3 check boxes. And they are clearly labled.
5) Manual Scanning
I think this is the weakest point in eTrust. It doesn't scan as fast as
PC-cillin. The worst part is that it pops up a huge progress window that
you can't hide. And the window is popped right in the middle and it takes
up half of the screen blocking everything.
Well. There you have it.
Now! To the Bat Cave... hmm no... to the "What Anti-Spyware Do You Use"
section!
