| Operating system WINDOWS XP.
|
| Browser page keeps changing to about:blank and have added unwanted toolbar
| in internet explorer. toolbar has icons on it for gambling, finance,
| insurance etc. Total crap. Ok, i followed advice on downloading spybot and ad
| aware. Successfully installed both. spybot took nearly 1 hr to scan. Ad aware
| - total disaster. Scan took 10 mins and detected 101 critical errors. Some
| were more critical as they had TAC rating of 10. I followed instructions and
| selected errors, clicked next and thast was to quarintine them. I left
| computer for about an hour and came back to find progress bar was half ways
| across. so i reset scan and got results and same thing after about 2 hrs. so
| last night at 10pm, i ran scan and left repair the whole night and when i got
| up this morning at 8am it was still the same. So i can't even get by ad aware
| to continue rest of instructions... sorry people..
|
| Should i reinstall windows xp. Ive spent alot of time and its really getting
| frustrating.
|
| Thanks for your patience
No, don't wipe the PC and rinstall the OS -- yet !
Make sure that it is SpyBot S&D v1.4 fully updated.
Also make sure tat you are using Ad-aware SE v1.06 and fully updated before scanning.
Please read - "How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
Then scan the PC using the anti malware utilities.
An additional tool is BHODemon v2 in case a Browser Helper Object has been inserted into IE.
One clean, an alternative is to use FireFox v1.05 as the default browser and ONLY using IE
when you need to use a web page specific for IE functionality.
