I use AVG Free Edition, and have done for years.
In 8 years I think I've found 2 virus infections - and one
was that Haunted PC
which my daughter loved (when she was about, like 9).

I would also run a free online scan from Trend or Panda once
a month
as a double check, but lately I 'll use Dave Lipman's
Cleanbat scripts for
Macafee and Trend. which have the advantage of being able to
run in safe mode.

I also have friends who use AVG, and some of them repeatedly
get infections of one type or another.
I believe it's more down to user sense - even the best
re-active software won't have today's virus sig. till
tomorrow.

At work we use Norton, which I have always found to be way
too big a drag on system resources
and difficult to reconfigure or remove.

My advice is to get the best security you can, but act like
you have none.
