Your modem will not work in safe mode without networking. I was (mistakenly
it seems) under the impression that you were on that PC when you posted
this. Try a restore point with safe mode. If it works then you should do the
cleaning as described in the earlier post/site. If not then you can do a
repair installation of Windows. "Reloading the CMOS info..." Probably
nothing there would help.

For a clean installation just pop the CD into the tray, make sure it's set
to boot to CD, reboot, and follow the directions.

You can download the programs mentioned in the earlier post and burn them to
CD on another computer, install them on the non functioning computer in safe
mode and scan. The downloads should contain reasonably updated definitions
already. That would be the route that I'd try first.
