David,

I now believe that the problem was caused by a failing logitech Cordless
Trackman FX track ball.....this track ball is almost as big as a
baseball..really nice to use...but no longer made and distributed by
logitech....and I have had three of them now go bad....after 3 years of
use.....but none of them have ever gone bad in this fashion....

Thanks for your help...I replaced the trackball with an old wired mouse that
I had laying around in my pc grave yard....and the problem has gone
away.......after I had removed the logitech mouseware software and
drivers....any way...the problem has now no longer reproducible....again
thanks for your assistance...

Lynn
