That depends on your email app.

If you have an email app that...
  - does not run scripts and junk in HTML "message text"
  - does not hide incoming attachments in the mailbox files
  - does not auto-extract these when links are clicked to "open" them
...then indeed, there is no need to scan mail. The risk exists purely
in the attachments, and the attachments will be scanned as they are
created as files at the time of arrival. This is how Eudora works.

If OTOH you have an email app that hides attachments within mailboxes
where they can never be scanned again, then email scanning is the only
opportunity you have to prevent malware being hidden in the mailbox.

As above. Here's what I'd do:

Good email app Bad email app
DUN Off Off
Broadband Off On

In this sense, "bad" email apps are anything that hide attachments in
mailboxes; Outbreak, OE, Netscape/Mozilla mail, Pegasus, etc.

The reason I'd turn off (actually, not install) email scanning with
Dial-Up Networking is because if you allow the email app to disconnect
when "done", it will do so when it has finished sending mail to the
av, but before the av has scanned and sent it out to the real email
server. In this situation, your email shows the message as sent, but
the recipient never gets it.

That's about as bad as email service can get, and is a big reason why
even av vendors have come to hate desktop mail scanning.

Advice applies to free AVG 7.0 - unlike AVG 6.0, where the email
scanning "just worked", AVG 7.0 is prone to the problems described
above, affecting both OE and Eudora on DUN.
