If you try to manipulate an attached file, the on access virus scanner
should alert on a virus (assumes current definitions and no "zero day"
virus). The email scanner just scans attached files sooner than the on
access scanner would scan them; at the expense of, possibly, corrupting the
message, or the client message store, if things go wrong during the POP3, or
SMTP conversation.
IOW, it serves no purpose.
