Are you sure this was the only update you downloaded from the Windows Update
site?
Hardware updates can also be delivered from here that are more likely to
mess up the device.
Try rolling back the device driver for the reader using Device Manager:
1) Right Click My Computer and select "Manage"
2) In the left hand windows select "Device Manager"
3) Double click the Smart Card Reader device to bring up it's properties
4) Click the Driver tab and click the Rollback Driver button
If this does not work you could try restoring to the last system restore
point before you did the update.
