Trouble Sending Email

When I try to send an email from my hotmail account, an error window keeps
coming up. I can't get a confirmation whether the email went through or not.
I'm told by my contacts that they either don't receive it at all or they get
it nine times.
Could this be a virus? I have McAfee Anti-virus but it hasn't detected
anything.
