Bob;
It is difficult to tell what happened if there have been no hardware or
software changes.
Some malware such as viruses has been know to cause this.

Simply activate as requested.
If internet activation fails, choose the option to activate by phone.
Call Microsoft at the displayed number, done in about 5 minutes.
