Avast not working, can't remove it neither

Hi all,
I have Avast installed on my comp. It is having problems and cannot scan the
system for viruses. I wanted to uninstall it in order to install a clean
copy. But impossible to remove it from the add/remove programs from Control
Panel. Any help would be much appreciated.
