Computers will yet drive me looney. :-) Last night I decided to back up
some files and noticed I could not get my DVD to open. I shutdown and went
to sleep. Got up to find the problem I described at the start of this
thread. Found and deleted one virus. Called Sony for help on the DVD. They
suggested that I remove the DVD unit and supply power only, then try to
open the tray. It worked, I put it back in the computer, and rebooted.
Everything works as prior to the virus incident! XP behaves properly and
the DVD is recognized.

I've printed out your instruction and will use them in the future. Thanks
for those. In the meantime, I'll endeavor to update my virus checker, NAV.

I think I mentioned that when I started to analyze my recent problem that
NAV was turned off. That I attribute to a bout with an SP2 (Svc Pck)
install for XP about six weeks ago. It did not go well, and I had to diddle
with firewalls settings, and possibly NAV. Somewhere along the line it must
have gotten turned off. Onward.
