1) Download the following four items...

         McAfee Stinger
         http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

         Trend Sysclean Package
         http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

         Latest Trend Pattern File.
         http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
         http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt363.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
        http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible
5) Using Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using the three
utilities; Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP, Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

| I turned off my computer last night and when I fired it up today, the boot
| process to Win was really slow. Once I got logged on it was again slow to
| populate the desktop with icons. I had planned to backup some files, and
| found that My Computer would appear but not any knowledge of my system's
| drives. I then dialed out, brought up Moz 1.7, got e-mail, and browsed the
| web. I went off to My Documents and was able to retrieve any that I wanted.
| Back to My Computer with the same result. Each time I cancelled My
| Computer, it would bring up a dialog that asked either to end the program
| or cancel. When I ended it, it killed the dialog, but took several minutes
| to repopulate the desktop icons.
|
| I ran NAV, which was current as of 12/15/2004 (or thereabouts), and found a
| virus that was deleted, v32[].kergo, I believe. I'm still seeing the same
| behavior.
|
| I just rebooted after the scan, and have been able to use My Computer to
| see a list of files on my C: drive, but it was quite a haul getting there.
| When I decided to return up a level, it went into stall mode again.
| However, I can pretty well do other things like use the internet.
|
| Are there any viruses out there that act like my description above? Maybe
| something since the middle of December.
