thanks for this Tim
kind of (accidentally?) resolved bits of the problem. i'm led to believe
it's a driver issue - mouse cursor doesn't move but does 'animate' when pc
made to work using keyboard inputs. will try repairing using an xp cd-rom if
i can get a hold of one
