Hi Ed,

I found this at Symantec's website and hope this is helpful information for
you.

Situation:
After updating Microsoft® Windows® XP to Service Pack 2, the message "Your
computer might be at risk. Your virus protection status is unknown" appears
periodically.

You are running any of the following:
-- Norton AntiVirus 2002/2003
-- Norton Internet Security 2002/2003 (includes Norton AntiVirus)
-- Norton SystemWorks 2002/2003 (includes Norton AntiVirus)

Why is this happening?
The Windows Security Center monitors and then reports on the status of
security programs installed on your computer. Norton security products
contain tamper protection features that prevent other programs, including
Windows, from determining their status.

This happens because the Windows Security Center sees that a Norton security
program is there, but Windows cannot monitor the Norton program's status, it
reports that your computer might be at risk. (In the Windows Security Center,
the status for Virus Protection appears red and displays "CHECK STATUS.")

Will this be fixed?
Symantec is planning an update, which will be available by LiveUpdate. The
update allows the Windows Security Center to correctly identify the status of
your Norton 2002/2003 security products and give you the option of
configuring how Norton security products and the Windows Security Center
alerts you.

When the update is available, this page will be updated.

What can you do now?
First, it is important to remember that these "alerts" only indicate that
the Windows Security Center cannot determine the virus protection status. It
does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong with your virus
protection. Please refer to your Norton security product for your antivirus
or firewall status.

What you can do is close the alert window and monitor your own virus
protection until Norton releases the Norton WMI Update for Norton AntiVirus
2003.
