pc eats jpg files

My HP pc started "eating" pictures (jpg files) stored on
my hard drive about a year ago. I have lots of virus
protection and do routine scans, etc. with no mention of
finding a virus. I can just click on a thumbnail image of
a picutre and get the message "preview not available". Or
I can look at the list of picutures in a directory of jpg
files and just by sliding the mouse over a file, the kb
changes from about 700 or so to 0 instantly. We have
called HP support and paid for it with no luck, as well as
cleaning up the hard drive, etc. That seemed to fix the
problem for awhile, but it came back. Any ideas? I don't
want to buy a new computer. Is it a software - Windows XP
Home Edition, or a hardware issue?

Thanks.
