    Kitty,
Restart your computer, then when it shows the first initial
    screen or logo,
hit the 'delete' key on the keyboard (or 'F10' if it's a
    Compaq or similar).
You should then find yourself looking at the BIOS options
    screen.
Look for ''boot options' or similar, and set the first
device to boot from CD Rom (or similar)

Press the 'esc' key, then the 'F10' key to 'exit and save
    changes'.

Restart your computer with the Windows XP CD in the drive,
    and follow the steps
    for a clean reinstall:
    http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or you might want to try a repair install instead:
    http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

DO NOT reconnect to the internet again without activating
    either the built in firewall
(open 'help and support' type in 'firewall') or whatever 3rd
    party one you use.

Immediately go to the windows update site and install ALL
    critical updates.

Don't forget you will need to reactivate Windows XP if you
    choose a complete reinstall.

Hope this helps a bit more,
    Chek
