Another aspect that confuses less-savvy home users like me is the fact that
Security Center (SC) seems able to report that my AV software (Grisoft's
AVG) is up to date when that just ain't necessarily so.

AFAICS, SC cannot truly check whether my AVG software is up to date without
comparing the latest update present on my HD with the latest update issued
by Grisoft, and it can only do this when I'm online. In the case of dial-up
users for whom automatic scheduled AV updating is inappropriate because they
go online at irregular, infrequent or unpredictable times (there must be
many such users) the most recent update present on the HD could be days,
weeks or even months old. Until the user goes online, however, SC would
continue to report - misleadingly - that all is up to date.

Or does SC simply look at the date/time of the most recent update present on
my HD and warn me when the interval since I last updated my AVG software
exceeds a certain limit? (This would be difficult to arrange, I guess, when
AVG have been known to issue three updates in one day).

Or am I worrying about nothing? Will SC check for discrepancies between my
HD and Grisoft's server each time I go online?

I ask because a couple of times now I've checked the server immediately
after reading SC's "all OK" report, and found an update waiting to be
downloaded.

Could some kind specialist tell me (a) just how Security Center determines
whether or not my AV software is up to date, and (b) exactly what it will
tell me if it ain't?

TIA
