Well, you never actually mentioned any virus names, but the symptoms you
described have been around for quite a long time, as have the viruses
causing them. Some of the viruses are Bugbear, Fizzer, Klez, Swen.
There are plenty more. As you discovered, many users think their
antivirus is OK, even though it may be the same version that came
preinstalled on their computer and the virus definitions subscription
ran out in 1999. I guess working here in the trenches (home users,
small businesses) you just get to know these things. ;-)
