No, everthing you launch should not bring up the rundll32.exe file. Most of the prefetch files have names associated with the program it is attached to. But, there are several files which do apparently generate rundll32 type files. One of them has to do with running a dll as app, I let it go (past my firewall) at one point an found it was a microsoft reach out and touch me type deal. it did bring back a useful update for my system, It was quite a while ago, so I don't remember many of the details. I do recall it was not bad thing at the time. (I admit I haven't let it go out again, although it does ask to occasionally)
A level three tech support person gave me a tip. If you want to find out what a program does, or what others say about it. search it with your browser on the net. You would be amazed at what comes up when you put "rundll32.exe" or any other file name, in the search engine.

The Prefetch file, as I understand it, is a system file that holds programs that go out to the net and "grab" stuff from the net that programs you have installed use. Some of them are for updates, some are for the author of the programs' to track what you are running, some just look for some sort of hand shake. Only the true gurus prob. know what they really do out there. I, personally, wonder through the prefetch file, now and again, and delete any/every thing I don't recognize. (I run an older system, and sometimes the prefetch stuff will steal focus) If the file was importante, it will reproduce itself at boot,{or not let you delete it}, if its not YEA!!!!!! Heck, I've even truned some of the prefetch files, which wouldn't delete normally, into "read" onlys, then deleted them.
