If you are using Dial up, first set up the ISP without the phone cable
connected then go to Control Panel > Network connections. right click
on the connection and open Properties. Go to the advanced tab and
put a tick in Protect my computer and network . . . . . . . . etc.

If you are using broadband, disconnect the phone cable or Co-ax cable
connection and install the modem drivers. Follow the same procedure as
above.

If you connect to the internet without a firewall enabled, you will
get a virus attack within the first second or 2, guaranteed.

The XP onboard firewall will protect you from incoming attacks but
will not stop any viruses already on the machine from accessing the
internet and possibly sending information to another computer. If you
want complete protection, then after installing all Microsoft updates,
install Zone alarm or a similar Firewall. You can then turn off the
XP firewall. But not before another is fully installed.
