New computers are extremely vulnerable. You need to turn on the Windows
firewall before connecting to the Internet or are likely to get hit with the
Sasser, Blaster, or possibly other worms as well. Then connect and do your
virus update and Windows Critical Updates immediately. Do not go to any
other web sites, do Email etc, until these are done.
Some antivirus programs allow installing a downloaded update before the
first connection. Others may not because of registration requirements.
Since you don't say which AV program you have, it's impossible to advise.
Note however, that it is the firewall that is the most critical element for
the initial connection.

I have setup Windows Xp on a computer and installed the virus software, but when I go to the virus update site on the internet, I get a worm or two before the download is complete and Windows xp shut me down. This is very frustrating and I hope there is a way to update the virus software before going on line. I tried Trend Micros virus file on disk but it says it is used only for Win98? What's with that. > -- > Cynthia B.
