Turn the XP firewall ON before connecting to the Internet.
Navigate to the connection properties (Control Panel/Network
Connections, right click on each connection, select advanced
tab and be sure a check in the box to protect the
connection.)
With a firewall in place, you can safely go to Windows
Update and your anti-virus website, just don't surf until
you have the a/v up[dated and keep a firewall active. The
XP firewall will keep them out, but you might want to
download the free Zone Alarm firewall, it will alert you to
Trojans trying to get out.

| How do you update your virus program after setting up a
new computer or clearing the harddrive before hitting the
internet? I have setup Windows Xp on a computer and
installed the virus software, but when I go to the virus
update site on the internet, I get a worm or two before the
download is complete and Windows xp shut me down. This is
very frustrating and I hope there is a way to update the
virus software before going on line. I tried Trend Micros
virus file on disk but it says it is used only for Win98?
What's with that.
