True for users of ANY antivirus app.

Especially if they think this protection will be so 100% effective
they can get click-happy, run with no firewall, not bother with
patches, and stay clueless on "safe hex".

That's a waste of time. Why would you expect the same av that let a
malware go active, to safely detect and remove it when active?

Yes - and unless you use your av as an on-demand scanner for material
*before* that material has been "opened", that is the ONLY usefulness
of a Windows-based av.

Updates are one key to getting the most out of your av. The other key
is knowing the av will not be infallible even if updated every 10
minutes, and managing risk accordingly.
