I believe the guy that he's having problems, I just don't think that not
using SpywareGuard is the core problem solution. And for some reason I'm
suffering a little bad karma of a slightly different type with one computer
that came in 2 days ago, that the user didn't keep anti-malware (except for
antivirus) protection up to date on and so toolbars and things like
ClockSync (yea, right) got in and really messed things up. It's warranty
work, too, by just a few days! Two problems remain stubborn: SpywareGuard
(wouldn't you know it, considering the thread!) gives an "unpack" error (and
the source is good, it's from my CD that I install it to many computers
from) during installation. 1st time I've every had a problem with SG, and
how coincidental that it should happen now. Same copy as was used to
installed last time on the same machine with no problems, actually, but
which was giving the same error trying to run it when it came back in. Very
strange. Seemingly unrelated problem is that a scripting update KB828026 for
Media Player 9.00.00.31.28 keeps being offered via web update site, although
prompted automatic update doesn't report on it. Re-installing DirectX almost
blew it up, but it finially took on 3rd try. I don't think Media Player
itself is at fault (it's supposed to be version 9.01b), something seems
hosed with registry on the ME machine but scanreg doesn't spot it and
neither does a Spybot system internals scan. Filemon and regmon don't give
me a clue, either. MP is not showing up in installed programs or anywhere in
components section (not good). I know these 2 things are residual malware
problems, all was ok after the last service and before the recent malware
infection. And MP, well, it just relies on so much core Windows
functionality... something core is hosed, maybe the 2 problems are related,
but I'm near the point of trying a re-install over existing (I hate having
to do that!!!) and then all the updates upon updates upon updates routine...
:(
