question about virus protection

There are so many different types of worms and parasites
that can infect a computer, and so many different ways to
get rid of them. My question is, is there an all around
way of geting rid of them? Also is there a way to do it
for free as some people for one reason or another might
not be able to purchase something that can protect their
computer.
