If a virus scanning site 'finds' a virus, and then wants you to make a
purchase for removal, it is a scam. What is this site and how did you find
it? Did a message just pop up and state that you had virus infections and
should go to that site?
If you don't have any antivirus program with up-to-date (at least weekly),
virus definitions you probably DO have virus infections on your system.
If you don't have all the security updates and critical patches for your
operating system you probably DO have virus infections on your system.
There are also three other programs you ought to have to keep your system
safer:
1. a personal (software) firewall
2. Spybot Search&Destroy
3. AdAware.
All three are free downloads (Zone Alarm is a free personal <software>;
Spybot Search&Destroy and AdAware protect against spyware, Trojan Horse type
infections, and unwanted advertising.
Symantec (publisher of Norton Antivirus) has a free virus scanner that you
can use online at
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ (click on the 'check for security
risks' logo on the right side of the web page, about half-way down)
and
Panda Software also has a free virus scanner that you can use on line at
http://www.pandasoftware.com/ (click on the 'Panda Active Scan' logo on the
left side of the web page.)
Both either remove viruses and/or give directions of how to repair your
system. (Some infections can just be deleted, some are in files that can be
repaired, some files can't be repaired, and must be restored from a clean
source.) As you will see, it is much easier to protect your system than to
clean it after infection.
Try these, and if you have additional questions, post them as replies to
your 'Help Again' post; that will keep all the information linked.
Splitting your question into unconnected posts makes everything difficult.
Also, in the future, try to use an informative subject line, not just "Help
Again", but something more like "Free virus scan found a virus, and now
wants me to pay for removal" or "Should I have to pay for a virus removal
kit? (don't change the subject line now, wait until you have a question on a
different subject.
