Symantec Corporate Anti-Virus is the best scanner on the market today.
It does not even allow access to the file - it's real time scanning is
the best I have ever seen.
While transferring data from one hard drive to another for a client of
mine - it had a few virus and Symantec catches them before they even go
near my hard drive.
I've downloaded some files through file sharing programs and if they are
a virus Symantec will find it and the transfer will 'fail' .
Free ware scanners like AVG are hit and miss. Be sure to run on line
scans weekly if you have any free virus software as they tend to let
viruses in. Even the pay for ones are not very good these days unless
you go for the Corporate solution. I have seen the Norton products let
virus in too, block peoples email, and just make life miserable. Then
theres Mcafee or however you spell that. I have removed norton/mcafee
from client computers so many times because it is Bloat ware and really
just impacts system performance. Just too many bells and whistles and
pretty graphics and because of that the live update files are larger in
size too.
So here is what i recommend. Do not pay for anti-virus software - use
AVG free http://www.grisoft.com/ It is basically the same as Norton and
there is no use in paying for software that does not work. AVG is much
lighter weight and does not bog down your system performance. Run the
on line scans weekly - a combination of AVG and online scans ensures
that your system is virus free.
