Some virus detectors will not recognize source code, some will. I use
Norton and it will see the virus signature in the source
If you wish to test your AV software, visit
http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
and follow the instruction.
The files are NOT virus files - but they do contain the standard virus
signature. They are available in various formats, including text (.txt)
If your AV software pick it up an an infected file, then everything is OK.
If your software doesn't spot the virus in the text file, then be careful.
I would still purge your newsreader cache, just to be safe.
I have the options on my reader, pan, set to clear the cache when I exit.
I had been surprised on several occasions when Norton detected a virus on
my computer, only to find it was in the newsgroup cache and innocuous.
Now, when I exit, whatever I had is gone.
I use pan because it is far safer than Outlook Express for such things and
it has the ability to "plonk" an author and to filter out lots of garbage
with the built-in filters or ones that I can create. I have one that will
not let me see messages that are crossposted. As a result, most of the NG
spam doesn't show up.
