There is another solution for recovering your data files if you don't have
the proper administrator password. If you have another partion on your hard
drive, install Windows XP in that partition (being careful to write down the
password... you will only use them for a short time.) The new installation
will allow you to access all the files from the original installation, but
will not treat any of the programs as installed. Copy the data files to
the new partition, then do a new install of Windows XP to the first
partition. You will then have a working Windows XP in the first partition,
all of your data files on the first partition, PLUS a copy of all your data
files on the second partition (along a second installation of Windows XP.)
You will then need to reinstall all your programs. If you don't have a
suitable second partition, you can add a second hard drive (a borrowed hard
drive with a couple of Gbytes will do.) OR you could use a program like
Partition Magician to create a new partition OR you could buy a program that
will recover the original administrator password; that program, however,
costs about $75 US and supposedly is good for only one use.
