no connection

I am running Windows ME edition. I lost my explorer
connection. I ran a system recovery and reinstalled
everything. I have now lost the explorer connection
again. I must have a virus. How do I get rid of the
virus? Will doing a system recovery work after getting
rid of the virus?
What software do you recommend for protection?
