You don't need to spend money, necessarily for either item (firewall or
anti-spyware tools.)
There are definitely firewalls that I'll cheerfully pay for.
anti-spyware tools, I'm not so sure about. I'll happily stick with the free
ones for now.
The average person is well served with Lavasoft's product, I think. You can
buy their commercial version and support an excellent product--the paid
version buys you some degree of pro-active prevention, rather than just
clean-up after the fact.
Then there is Spybot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org Also
free, also updated regularly, and excellent.
And one more, which you might find interesting: Spyware Blaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/index.html
This one is technically very different from the others--It is near
instantaneous in its effect, and is a permanent solution for the particular
bugs that it targets.
Each of these critters has pluses and minuses. Spyware Blaster has no
minuses I can think of, except that it covers fewer area than the other two.
Spybot search & destroy has some settings which I consider a bit too
paranoid--you are quite safe with the items it highlights in red, however.
It is updated somewhat less frequently than Ad-aware.
Ad-aware is very solid, and I have no hesitations about removing what it
flags. Spybot may well be better at some classes of bugs, though--diallers,
for example.
You might want to try Ad-aware, then see whether Spybot Search & Destroy
finds anything more. Spyware Blaster won't say what is found or not
found--it just "innoculates" against a range of bugs. Very simple and
quick.
As I say--I don't know of a paid app to recommend that does anything better
than these do. If you want to spend money, both Ad-aware and SpywareBlaster
have paid versions or paid functionality.
