System Restore "Crashed" LiveUpdate on Norton AntiVirus..Why?

I recently needed to do a System Restore back to a point prior to the Virus
Definition downloaded via Norton AntiVirus LiveUpdate.

After this restore, Norton AntiVirus was unable to re-install the updated
virus definitions. Even Intelligent Updater yielded error messages about
"damaged files". I had to uninstall and reinstall several Symantec programs
to get it working agian. Seems that the System restore had "confused"
LiveUpdate as to which Virus Definitions were or werent installed on the
PC.

In the process I upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2004. It now seems to be
functioning smoothly and installing update Virus Definitions.

I have done such restores several times in the past, and LiveUpdate simply
reinstalled the Virus Definitons "undone" by the System Restore. What might
have gone wrong this time? Does this happen often? How can I prevent this
in the future?

My OS is windows ME
I use Norton AntiVirus 2004
Norton Personal Firewall 2003

Thanks:
-Eli
