Also SpyBot Search and Destroy free from
www.safer-networking.org will clean and immunize you against
about 500 known evil sites and against homepage hijacking.
A very powerful and excellent program.

I run the free Zone Alarm firewall, SpyBot and Ad-Aware,
McAfee anti-virus. You should make sure your children's
account is set to limited user status after you get it clean
and the programs mentioned install, running properly and
configured the way you want.

Also you can use the tools menu of Internet
Explorer/Internet Options in the privacy and security tabs
to block cookies and restrict any access to web sites and
domain that you want to keep from your children.

I also have used a program called Spysites free from
http://camtech2000.net/Pages/SpySites_Program.html
to block a bout 2000 sites from placing cookies.

You can find a lot of information at TechTV on the Call for
Help program pages. They have a pretty good search and you
can search for article about child proofing your computer.

It is always best to have the computer in a common room so
you can see what they are doing. Be sure to monitor and
caution them about never giving out their telephone number
or other info to anyone on the net.

| You need to tighten the security on your machine,
| and you need to clean out the problems loose security has
| caused. The tools for doing this are available without
| cost.
| First - make sure that you have applied all critical
| updates to your operating system. Vulnerabilities in an
| operating system that is not updated allow the hijacking
| you describe. You can find updates at:
| Next: If you do not have a firewall, install and
| properly configure one. You wouldn't leave your house
| door wide open to anyone who wished to enter, so don't
| allow open access to your computer. A free firewall
| version is offered by ZoneAlarm (lower left corner of the
| screen under ZoneAlarm(free)):
| Next - set your browser security and privacy to the
| highest level that still allows you to do what you want
| and need to do online. These options are generally
| accessed under your browser's "Tools" menu.
| Finally, to remove what has already entered, use
| spyware removal tools, such as Adaware from Lavasoft:
| Since attacks change, be sure that you select the option
| to "Check for updates" before each spyware scan.
| I am assuming that you have antivirus software, and
| that you update its definitions and scan often. If you do
| not have such a product, try an online scan, like that
| offered at:
| If you are not able to resolve the problems using
| these tools, there are groups that can help you get a
| description of what is on your machine, and what should
| be removed. A tutorial for one such tool (HijackThis) and
| its support group can be found at:
| As a workaround, until you have resolved the
| problems, you might consider letting the kids use the
| machine but unplugging their online access.
