Bill,
What you are experiencing is very unlikely to be as a result
of infection by any virus.
What is more likely is that your modem itself (or the software
that controls it) is generating that message.
The new dial-up modem specification from the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) is known as V.92, and if your
modem or computer are new then it's very likely your modem
conforms to those standards.
V.92 includes a feature called 'Modem on hold' (MOH) which
is supposedly able to pause your internet connection while
you made (or receive) a telephone call.
It's almost certainly the MOH that's giving you that messgae.
I would contact your modem or computer manufacturer, who
should be able to provide you with support tailored to your
particular hardware.
Good luck!
Andrew
