Q1: How do I initiate the process (I have Windows XP with all of the necessary disks)? BTW, I tried system restore and it doesn't go back far enough.
check the manual that came with your PC for details.

Q2: Is this the right thing to do? Should I do a complete system reinstall?
would depend if the virus you speak of has corrupted vital system files and in effect prevents you from using your PC.

Q3: Should I get a pro to do this for me... i.e. is this in one of the "....for Dummies" books or will I likely make things worse?
yes, you should take your box to the shop and let a pro investigate the extend of damage the virus has cause. do keep in mind that if you do a complete system reinstall then all your personal files such as documents, pictures, music files, etc will be delete and you may not be able to recovered them.
