this message, I opened AVG for windows and scanned in the C drive for it,
only to see no virus was found.

of the location. To begin with, I didn't even know I had a system volume
information folder. So I went into folder options in the control panel and
set it to show all files. I wanted to understand just what kind of thing I
was dealing with here so I went to C:\ and tried to open the now apparent
"System Volume Information" folder only to find "access is denied". And this
is on a personal computer. Just what is "System Volume Information"? Is it
possible for there to be a virus in there? And if there is, how can I access
it?

Standard Win9? installation has no folder
 c:\SystemVolumeInformation\
(but you did not say what OS you use.)

You can use DOS and
C:> DIR Sys*.*
If you are sure this is a bogus folder
C:> DELTREE \Syst*.*
and reboot.

But ask first in a NG that specialises
in your Operating System whether
this is a normal folder. DOS
ignores the protection built into Windows.
