You are so right. Like all pre-packaged software, a shippable CD can
never be current. MS should have a secure online way of distributing an
up-to-the-minute critical update package which can be applied to
the OS prior to first going online with it.
MS should also modify their OS so that no software can be installed in any
way unless it and the current user have administrative priviliges, and
then to force the default install to make the user a non-administrator.
The could even go further by never allowing the system to boot into
administrator, but requiring an addition process to log in as su.
Most people who use OSs rarely go online as an su. When I set up XP for
someone, I create a "normal" user for them and explain how to relogin as
administrator, only when it it needed or required by some software - and
then to log out as soon as they are done. I have few complaints from
these clients of mine when they do as instructed.
