You need anti-virus. Norton should be more than sufficient.
I use F-Prot for windows, have for about 6 years now. Low on resources
and suits my home setup well.
I would suggest Spybot S&D and Adaware. www.lavasoftusa.com
I find the two of them a good one two punch. Never run both at the
same time. And both are free.
I have no idea what most of the other software is and I am not
interested in learning them. Besides I like free it suits my budget
better.

I would recommend a firewall, XP comes with a firewall but it doesn't
block what leaves your computer because it assumes you know what you
want to send off of the machine.
There are a number of free ones available. I am using Kerios this
month.
www.kerios.com
There is also Zonealarm, www.zonelabs.com
Sygate - www.sygate.com
Tiny Personal Firewall - www.tinysoftware.com
Outpost - http://www.agnitum.com/download/

Only use one, they can conflict. They are all easy to setup and use
right out of the box.

As far as being totally protected, I wish you luck Most products are
only as good as the next virus, malware, spyware etc.... That's why
they update.

You should practice safe hex. www.claymania.com has a good site to
read, they are people from alt.comp.virus that started a web site
about 3 or 4 years ago to assist people like your self.

And you'll find google is your friend.

Keep these things in mind always.
1. Keep your anti-virus product up to date.
2. Update your dat files for your spyware products periodically.
3. Visit windows update regularly or set up automatic updates.
4. Run a firewall and watch what is leaving your machine.
5. Don't open mail attachments or subscribe to the mass hysteria of
email chain letters. (the little bear on the computer is a friend, he
isn't a bugbear)
