A friend has WindowsXP, got Download.Trojan and like a gazillion other
spyware files, dialers, etc, followed suit.
We did the stuff Symantec recommended to rid it. We used Ad Aware,
Spybot, Trojan Remover, HiJackThis, and still it has problems.
It goes from being able to download e-mail one day to not being able
to the next, and not because of any message overload. It also won't
use the shortcut in the Startup folder to connect.
We can tell if the Download.Trojan is still there or not as Norton
only saw it once and never again, and never was able to rid it when it
did see it. We are about ready to backup drivers, reformat the HDD and
reload XP. I did give him Sygate PF to replace Zone Alarm. This trojan
or whatever it brought in trashed Zone Alarm.
System restore is out because Symantec's instructions included
disabling it temporarily which means restore dates are gone. It has
since been turned back on but of course has no good restore dates.
Anything we can do less drastic than reloading the OS that some guru
knows will work to make sure this bug and its friends are gone and
rectify the aftermath?
Thanks,
Dave
