gettng rid of spyware

using Windows 98, didn't have an up-to-date AV! - believe
computer is infected with virus or spyware or both.

I've read 'frequent questions' but am having difficulty
getting signed on to get to the sites you have
recommended.

Does computer need to be totally reformatted to get rid of
this garbage? On top of everything, User has lost his W98
disk - can you use someone elses? How do you reformat?

Beginner - please use layman's terms. I will print and
