Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Zone Alarm are all reasonably safe.

Ad-aware is the only one of these I'd recommend without reservation--even it
removes one item I consider innocuous--the alexa-related urls in Internet
Explorer.

Spybot can be quite paranoid in some of its recommendations.

Zone Alarm can be unnecessarily alarming sometimes--don't get too riled
about all the stuff being thrown at you--it was all there before you
installed ZA and it didn't get you then either.

Nothing can make use of Kazaa safe. Use the lite version, but be aware that
a great many files exchanged in this way are found to contain malware

-------------------
A significant surge in malware intentionally being posted and
unknowingly being shared on P2P file sharing networks. For example,
according to new research conducted by Hughes, 45% of the free files
collected via KaZaA, the most popular program for downloading free files
and music, were viruses, Trojan horse programs and backdoors.
"Organizations need to warn their employees about file-sharing
applications and the danger they pose to them at work and at home,"
advises Hughes.
