You were close, Bill.

The real problem was an outdated driver for my PCI IDE Controller.
It's strange to me that the driver would cause this sort of problem--a
file that is on the hard drive appears in explorer yet seems
corrupted. Anyway, installing the updated Promise driver fixed my
problem.

The virus (ms blaster, I believe), was real enough. But unfortunately
the biggest hassle it caused for me was throwing up a red herring in
my search for a solution to the problem at hand.

At least I've learned my lesson about worms and viruses. I thought
somehow I was immune because I had never gotten hold of one before.
