I recently downloaded a file that I believe had a
virus in it. I was wary of it so I checked the file prior
to opening it with Norton Antivirus, but no virus was
detected so I opened it. Shortly afterwards I noticed the
computer acting sluggishly so I restarted it. Because I'm
operating on Windows 98 and I use the computer on a
network, the prompt to enter a username and password
appears before Windows will open. There are no problems
at this point, everything seems normal.
I used (cntrl alt+del) to see what was running at
the point of this login screen and the only thing running
was my rundll file. I believe this is normal. However,
one instance of the many times I tried to reboot my
computer, in addition to the (RUNDLL) file I saw listed
was (<unknown>) and (mmtask). Thinking these were part of
the infected files/virus, I selected to end task on the
unknown and mmtask.
Regardless, once I pass the login screen everything
appears to be acting normal until the bottom windows
taskbar flashes for just a second and then disappears.
Once gone, the screen goes black. The mouse and the
keyboard still respond, but nothing can bring windows
back up. I used (Cntrl alt+del) again at this point, and
nothing is listed. On various instances, I have
encountered an error message involving Kernel 32. I am
not familiar with that or this situation and I am in dire
need of assistance. If anyone has information, please
offer assistance. Thank You.
