Kathi,
In both cases yes. There is just too much junk floating around the internet
these days to risk it.
If you do get antivirus software, make sure you update it often (free for
most all ) as new versions of virus come out all the time.

A firewall is usually a software program that partially isolates your PC
from the Internet making you almost invisible, without one, some can send a
command to your PC and do about anything they want to, the Firewall looks
for these kinds of requests and blocks them.

Two products I have used for years and work very well are:
Spybot-Search and Destroy: This was written and designed by a very smart
and helpful person, Patrick Kolla. The software is "Shareware" so its free
or you can be nice and send him a donation, either way, you get the same
program. It searches for cookies and programs on your PC that track what you
do and send this info to others, these can be very nasty as some end up
sending half of your life story (Passwords, Credit Card info...etc) The
software searches for these on your PC and erases them. It has "saved me"
many times. Here is the site:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsd

I use Zone Alarm Pro for my firewall and it has blocked all attempts at
getting to my PC, I think the demo is still free, the real one is not that
expensive. They also provide alot of useful info on the web site. Link is
here,

I do not use a separate Virus checker anymore as the two programs running
seem to catch the virus before they get to me. Others say you have to have
virus protection in a separate program. Lots of different views on this one.
Anyway, hope that helps !
Tedd
