i haven't received alot of spam in a few years. but, this is the first i've posted to this
    server in a few years.
i put up with the spam i do get as it gets sorted before i even see it. my isp will send
me a notice every 2 weeks. before they empty that folder for me, i have the chance to go
look to make sure they don't have good mail there. i haven't hidden my address in years
either. it's on my site & a few others. i have groups on the AnnexCafe' server. i guess
our addresses could be harvested but i've not noticed any increase in the time i've been
there. (3 years) as for anyone posting spam there, we clean it out & send a bill to the
originating isp. <BG> we've never collected but have shut down a few. (spammers, not
isps!) i think they spread the word that we won't tolerate it. since swen, yes, i see it
posted here. it's not ever been posted to AnnexCafe'. if it was, it would be removed
immediately. i haven't seen any mass infection there, nor complaints about the fake emails
like there is here. we have over 300 groups and no sign of swen from any members
    through-out.

so, the spam phenomenon you speak of... yes, i'm aware of it but i don't worry about it. i
don't open it nor do i 'unsubscribe'. i rarely post to other servers so i didn't think to
change my email before posting here. <BG> i received a total of 5 virus's yesterday after
posting. since then, none. i had 2 when it first started. that's a total of 7 for me since
it started. my address hasn't changed & has been 'out there' for a few years.

i don't munge my address because my groups are for people new to computers & the internet.
they wouldn't know how to unmunge if they needed to email me. (help! why can't i post to
    the group?)
in between playing, we are very big on talking security. members are taught to munge their
addresses. they are told when there are updates to any security or av software. (& taught
how to update manually) they are warned when new virus's are out. this is for all groups,
not just mine. we do what we can, not the same as you do here though! WOW!!!!!! you all
just don't have time to play!!!!!! that's a shame. everyone should have time to play. :(

i've learned much from your posts, thank-you for sharing your knowledge.

    Greetings --

It's been well known for years now that posting/publishing a real
email address to _any_ newsgroup or web site is an open initiation to
be spammed. For years now, spammers have been using automated tools
to harvest email addresses from Usenet. What I don't understand is
why you're just now noticing the phenomenon.

You're receiving these emails because your email address is in
the address book of someone infected with a worm, and/or because _you_
posted your real email address somewhere on-line, either in a forum
accessible to the public and spambots, such as Usenet, or on an
untrustworthy web site that subsequently sold your address as part of
    a mailing list.
