There are difficult issues here. I cleaned a trojan from a client on
Saturday. If I understand Norton's web contact page properly, other than
calling me, they'd have had a choice of paying $40 for some instructions for
them to follow to get cleaned, $70 to have their hand held during the same
process, or $5/minute for handholding billed to the phone bill. The process
involved in cleaning the trojan bore near zero resemblance to the removal
instruction on the page for the trojan on their website (downloader.trojan.)
So, they've paid norton, Norton has named the critter and told them it can't
clean it nor can it quarantine or delete it--they are still infected. Ditto
under Administrator in safe mode. At this point, they have to pay Norton
more $ to get cleaned up. Is this what they bargained for in buying the
software? Probably not. Is Norton doing it's job? Probably--they are at
least warning about the infection--that the cleanup is more complex than
they have stated at the website is just a fact of life with trojans--they
can pull in other threats.
Did Norton do a better job than a free antivirus with no tech support might
do? I'm not convinced. It did at least clue us in to the location of the
virus, but gave it a filename which didn't exist on the machine. On
difficulty today is the varying names given the same critter by different
vendors--you almost need a second opinion to be sure you can search all
vendors databases to get the best removal instructions.
