The other one I've heard people rave about is Turnpike. Haven't looked to
see that it still exists and is being kept up.
I'm tempted to go back to Agent. It is a simpler app, with no registry
footprint.
OE has the defect of finding your "database" of newsgoup posts suddenly
disappearing because a group becomes inaccessable--for example at the end of
a beta test, when private groups associated with the beta are closed.
Agent is clunky with respect to handling multiple newsservers, though--you
have to trick it by duplicating the install, as I recall.
OTOH, Agent is actively maintained, and a newer version of the paid
commercial product is in the works.
I think I haven't switched back largely because of inertia--I'm getting over
shingles and I haven't nearly the energy I should have and there's a
lengthening list of things I should be getting done, and switching
newsreaders is pretty low!
Its very easy to just download the free version of Agent, install and
configure it and try it out in a given group so you can compare how you like
it. It has been long enough since I ran it that I can't recall what the
"tricks" were--in OE, for example, I have rules set that highlight my own
messages and mark threads that I reply to as "watched" so I can see fairly
easily when there are responses I need to check on. Can't recall how those
mechanisms work in Agent.
