Well, there's certainly an update that has needed to be applied to older
versions, and older versions will be unable to connect, so it's possible
that this message is coming from a bona fide source. But why risk it?

Open up Internet Explorer, or some other web browser if you feel that IE
might have been compromised, and use it to download the latest version of
Windows Messenger. In fact, while you're online, you might also make sure
that you visit the Windows Update site and check that the rest of your
system is up to date. Then visit a virus scanning service to check whether
you're infected with anything.

http://www.microsoft.com/protect will provide links for the process of both
patching and virus scanning. Windows Messenger can be updated from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/default.asp - that way, you'll
know that you have the latest version, and you'll know that if the message
is still there, it's a bogus one. If the message goes away, it's likely
that it was genuine, and you needed to update Windows Messenger.

Alun.
