Swen gets through anti-virus software

I have Norton 2002 Professional Security firewall with
Norton anti-virus running in the background, Live updates
of virus definitions, plus Spybot an Ad-Aware. I am up-to-
date on critical Windows ME patches.

I have been getting 7-10 mostly Swen infected emails a day
for the past several weeks, sucessfully intercepted and
quarantined by Norton. Today after my morning ritual of
infected email and quarantine, I noticed one last
suspicious email did not alert the anti-virus. I quickly
deleted it, then ran a virus scan which produced one
infected file that I quarantined. I reran the scan which
showed a clean system. Not feeling secure, I ran the
Symantec site-based virus detection which showed 19 swen
infected files. I downloaded the swen removal tool and
sucessfully eliminated the files.

My questions are:
1. After weeks of sucessfully detecting swen (and other)
infected files, why did one get through?
2. I realize this should be addressed to Norton but
perhaps someone can answer: why would my anti-virus
indicate that the system was clean when the Symantec site-
based virus detection showed infected files?

Any answers would be welcomed.
